From the first whistle, we could tell something was different about this season. But even after its conclusion, it is difficult to capture it in words.
Taking a look back at the images, however, we’re reminded of that intangible air that engulfed this special campaign.
The best place to start is The Proving Ground.
For the majority of our players, it was a foreign space at the beginning. By the end of our home opener against FC Tulsa, it was evident that this would be our fortress.
But unlike in years past, a professional coaching debut would come just over a month into the season. Jack Collison's promotion from the Academy to Atlanta United 2 would only deepen the bonds that were there when he arrived.
The fun was just beginning...
With one of the youngest rosters in the USL Championship, each season for the 2’s is marked by a number of individual and collective firsts.
This season, a handful of players grabbed their first professional goals—some even grabbed their first hat tricks. Others signed their first professional deals. And, per usual, several Academy players were awarded their first tests at the professional level.
The relationships that formed away from the pitch were, without a doubt, instrumental to the performances on it.
From the players to the technical staff to the fans, bonds were made that would last, even as some beloved members of the 2-Spike family departed.
Through the ups and the downs, there was a constant air of belief. This team found a way when there was seemingly no way.
Through the lens of those privileged enough to watch them, week in and week out, gratitude is the feeling we are left with.
Gratitude for the highs, the lows, and above all, the foundation laid for next season.
