Curran continued to play until he was 18, when he had an opportunity to move to the States to play at the college level. He started at Schoolcraft College, then transferred to Xavier University for his last two years. Right out of college, Curran started his coaching career. His first job landed him in the Peach State at Georgia Southern University where he earned his Master’s degree in Kinesiology and was a Graduate Assistant Coach for their team.
After finishing his Master’s, Curran traveled back north to Ohio where he coached under the current head coach of the Columbus Crew, Caleb Porter, at the University of Akron. Within two years in 2010, Akron won the NCAA National Championship which included former Atlanta United midfielder Darlington Nagbe.
After a few years in Ohio, Curran made his way back to the South, where he landed a job at Clemson University. At Clemson, he worked with a handful of players and staff that ended up working with him at Atlanta United, the next stop in his career.
“I guess we all enjoyed working together that much so we found a way to do it again,” Curran said with a laugh.
