Growing up as a young boy in Dublin, it’s fair to say all signs pointed toward Kevin Egan falling in love not with soccer, but with another local favorite: Gaelic Football.
“My father Liam was a member of the Dublin team in the 70s that was hugely successful,” he says. “I grew up dreaming of replicating my Dad by wearing the sky blue of ‘the Dubs’.”
But while he had Gaelic Football skills of his own, it was the other “football” that stole his heart.
“On the street, all we ever played was soccer. It was an absolute obsession."
"Some of my favorite memories take me back to summer nights in Dublin, where it stays bright until about 10pm. There was usually enough of us for at least a 4v4 and we’d play until we’d get the dreaded call of ‘time’s up’ off our Mothers.”
After his father won the Gaelic Football championship, his team took a tour of the United States, where he met the woman who would one day become Kevin’s mother. So years later, as Kevin got his start in television getting coffee for TV hosts in his native Ireland, he started eyeing his second home.
“I had a desire to test myself and see if I could get any TV experience. I moved to Chicago in 2009, lived with my Grama Maisie for a while, met my lovely wife Megan within the first couple of weeks, and eventually got a job as a graphics producer at the Big Ten Network."
"Luck was on my side, as well as some phenomenal people.”
The Windy City is where Kevin got his first taste of Major League Soccer, starting as the sideline reporter for the Chicago Fire, eventually working his way into the booth as color commentator.
“The intangibles like passion and love were clear to see, but MLS in 2012 compared to 2018 is a completely different beast. From transfer power, to quality on the pitch, to TV broadcasts, to attendances, it’s a vastly different landscape.”
From there he moved on to beIN Sports, where he covers the likes of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar. While that is still where he spends most of his time, his life changed when he met Darren Eales and Carlos Bocanegra.
“Atlanta United is so lucky to have both Darren and Carlos."
"The way they spoke about what was then just a project was absolutely infectious. I followed the progress; from stadium news, to player acquisitions, to the record number of fans on board, and to be honest I was in awe.”
While he was impressed by the team’s plans, that “awe” didn’t truly sink in until his first Atlanta United match.
“The fans have surprised me in every way. From the flags on every street in Atlanta, to the march to the stadium, to the chants. I was at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the opener against FC Dallas, and those sights and sounds will never be forgotten.”
“I have friends living all over the world, and every one of them knows about Atlanta United, and how this team has taken MLS to a new level."
"The hiring of Tata, the recruiting and the style of play are all new heights for the league, but it’s the stadium and the raucous fans that has piqued the interest elsewhere.”
His list of favorite moments from year one is long: from working with Dan Gargan –– “For me, he’s got it all… and he’s just a really good fella, who’s capable of a joke and a laugh” –– to calling Brandon Vazquez’s goal against Real Salt Lake, which he calls a fairy tale debut for the young forward. But he knows one moment stands out above the rest.
“My favorite call was probably Miguel Almirón’s opener against Houston last May. Miggy hit a hat trick, and that first was an absolute peach from the Paraguayan! I know, it’s smothered in cheese. It’s really my favorite because it’s the one Atlanta United fans seem to remember, which is special. Bobby Dodd was rocking that day!”
While he always knew he wanted to come back for year two, he wasn’t sure it would work out with his other work commitments. But now that it’s official he will be calling play-by-play for local broadcasts in season two, he says he danced in his living room when he found out. He can’t wait for what’s to come, and it’s evident in his smile.
“I’m most looking forward to the energy of the games. As a commentator, I’m salivating at the thought of Almiron, Villalba, Barco and Josef Martinez running at opposing defenders.”
But what stands out above all else is once again the Atlanta United faithful.
“I can’t thank the fans enough for welcoming me with open arms. I was always told about the Southern hospitality, and how peach country is a warm, friendly place, and it couldn’t be more true. Here’s to a great season!”
