“No matter where I’ve played I’ve tried to play the same way and give 100%, but there’s just a different vibe to playing here, at home and for my city.” -Alec Kann
Alec Kann is one of the four Atlanta natives behind the crest of their city’s club.
Alec grew up playing as both a field player and a goalkeeper. Although his parents never played soccer, him and his older brother held an undying dedication to the game.
“Some of the best friendships that I’ve made have been through soccer and that’s something that I'll forever be thankful for."
The game has allowed Alec to travel the world, gifting him the opportunity to build a special bond with the people he has called teammates and family.
Coming to play in Atlanta may put Alec in a familiar place, but also a very unique situation. As an MLS expansion team, Alec is one of over 30 new players, all working to form relationships with each other quickly since only stepping foot on the field together for the first time on January 23 of this year.
“Atlanta has changed a lot since I left in 2008. There’s a ton of new neighborhoods. I feel like I’m almost moving back to a new city, but it still feels like home.”
Selected by Atlanta United in the 2016 MLS Expansion Draft, it was a pleasant surprise for Alec Kann. He attended Furman University and went on to play for various professional clubs, most recently Sporting Kansas City. He was drafted to ATL UTD unexpectedly, but fortunately this meant he was coming home.
The ATL is the largest city in the South, known for its unique diversity and culture. Soccer has never been what comes to mind when you think of the international hub, but Atlanta United is changing that.
“Our fans have made Atlanta into a soccer city. It didn’t feel like that when I left but it definitely does now.”
With over 30,000 season tickets sold, Atlanta United has proven that soccer culture exists in The A. The city is rallying behind the red, black and gold, and the inaugural MLS season will be forever ingrained in the history of Atlanta.
Not only a homecoming for Alec Kann but also a homecoming for the beautiful game that the city has been waiting for.
