Atlanta, Georgia. It’s known for its Southern Hospitality, the hip-hop scene, fashion and swagger. But, for entertainer Trinidad James, it has a little more meaning.
“Atlanta is the soundtrack to my life,” James expresses with passion.
James was born in Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago. He moved to a few different places with his family before settling in Atlanta. He went to elementary, middle school and finished up at South Atlanta High School.
“Out of all the places I’ve lived, Atlanta is the place that molded me into the man I became to a certain extent,” James shared with sincerity. “It gave me structure, it gave me a foundation, and it gave me to a certain extent that swagger how I do everything I do.”
Before his career took off, James worked in Underground Atlanta for three-and-a-half years at a men’s fashion boutique. Fashion is a part of James’ life. He’s passionate about it. He interacted with all different people around the city walking in and out of the boutique.
“I was able to sell clothes and make relationships with guys that were hustling in the streets, the guys working in corporate buildings, the kids that went to Georgia State and kids who went to AUC by the West End Mall,” James shared.
Meeting with all different people around the city helped him realize he was yearning to pursue other endeavors.
“I thought I was not giving everything I got,” James said. “I wasn’t giving my full potential and that’s because I wasn’t in a place to do it. I wanted to give myself the opportunity to do more, so working in that store, I decided to write music while I was in that store working.”
As James started his journey into the entertainment scene, his focus wasn’t just solely on music, but on being the best- all around entertainer. His focus on the greater scheme of things allowed him to catch the eye of many consumers, people, and most importantly, labels.
“I care about being the best entertainer,” James stated with confidence. “I don’t care about being the best rapper or the best studio person. It’s a package. Entertainment isn’t just about rapping. When I approached the game, I approached it more visually.”
Nothing is given. It’s earned. James worked hard at his craft. He dedicated time to building himself into the entertainer he is. His support system helps him in his success just like any professional, whether it's a singer, actor, athlete or entertainer like James. Support is something James is passionate about. Support from his city, just like the love and support he appreciates. It reminds him of the Atlanta United fan base.
When Atlanta United started, James wasn’t sure about the team. Where he grew up in Trinidad and Tobago, soccer runs in their veins. They are born and raised around the game.
“I didn't take Atlanta United seriously because I’m from Trinidad where soccer is the number one sport,” James said.
After attending some ATL UTD matches, he was amazed by what he experienced with all of the 17s roaring at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
“The fact you can go to a soccer game in Atlanta, Georgia, in the south and there’s over 70,000 people in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, that’s amazing,”James declared. “Soccer is support. That’s what makes soccer, soccer — the support. I support that. I support, support. That support is what showed me that I didn’t know this type of support existed in Atlanta still.”
Atlanta brings people together whether it’s through music, sports, or entertainment. Together we all support one another to come together which makes Atlanta different.
“It’s not just East Coast influence or West Coast influence or Midwest influence. It’s deeper south. It’s our own type of south,” James said. “We pull from all those factors to make it our sauce.”
