From conquering Friday Night Lights, showing out on the baseball field to rocking out in front of thousands of people, drummer and singer of Mayday Parade Jake Bundrick still had another passion left to discover— soccer.
And it all started out with his competitive mentality.
“Everybody on tour played FIFA,” Bundrick says. “I’m a really competitive guy, so I want to win. I started to learn soccer and how to play.”
Like many kids, Bundrick played multiple sports growing up. His passions were found on the diamond and on the football field. He played baseball and football for four years at Cairo High School. He even held the state record for most career field goals in the state of Georgia from 2001 to 2018.
After his outstanding career in high school, he had opportunities to play collegiate sports, but turned them down to pursue music.
“I went to junior college where I made the baseball team,” Bundrick said. “I literally made the team, walked out of the room, and talked to my parents. I told them I didn’t want to do this. I lost my love for baseball. I went back in and told my coaches.”
After working at a tire store then practicing in empty warehouses with his band, he finally found his musical family that would one day become the band Mayday Parade.
“We ended up meeting all the guys that were in Mayday Parade,” Bundrick says. “We were like you guys are good. We are good. Let’s join forces and make a super-band. We wrote some songs together, and then we realized it was a no-brainer.”
