Atlanta United arrived at Finley Stadium to face NPSL side Chattanooga FC. The team was greeted by a multitude of fans waiting anxiously to see their team enter a stadium for the first time.
More than 12,000 fans were in attendance to watch ATL UTD take the pitch, many making the trip up from Atlanta to witness their team in action. The team kicked off wearing their red and black striped primary kit, which was released last November.
Within nine minutes, Atlanta United scored its first goal in club history when Miguel Almirón fed a beautiful splitting through pass to teammate Tito Villalba who slotted it past the opposing goalkeeper. Yamil Asad followed up scoring the second goal of the game with a bending strike that landed just inside the far post.
Putting the "fans first" mentality into practice, the club had a special surprise at halftime for some of their most committed supporters who travelled to Chattanooga. After receiving boxes resembling gold bars, the fans simultaneously opened their gifts to unveil the team's secondary kit resting inside. In addition, pressed on the back of each top was the number 17, a number officially reserved and dedicated to the fans by Atlanta United.
While the fans reveled in the excitement of the surprise, Atlanta United's squad appeared from the locker rooms sporting the newly unveiled kit.
It was a historic day for the club and a game the supporters will remember for a long time to come. Returning to their city with a 4-0 win under their belt, Atlanta United hopes to maintain the momentum as they go on to face their first ever MLS opponents in the Carolina Challenge Cup in Charleston, SC.
