Atlanta has been in quarantine for over six weeks leaving its residents to work from home. This also includes Atlanta United players Mo Adams and George Campbell. Besides their Zoom workouts, fitness plans and eating plans, Adams and Campbell are taking college classes.
“I am trying to do everything I can with what I have,” Adams explained. “I think the club has been extremely supportive in giving us everything we need whether it is Zoom workouts or meal plans. They are taking care of us.”
For Adams, he always knew education was important to him. After finishing grade school in England, he was offered a professional contract and the next day suffered an injury. They subsequently took away his contract. In England, he had to pick soccer or university since it was not feasible to do both at the same time. Instead he chose to go to America where he attended Syracuse for three semesters and competed in collegiate soccer.
“It gave me a sense of security if soccer didn’t work out I would have something to fall back on, but even though I did well in school and managed to get drafted early, it was something I promised my family early and promised myself it was something I wanted to complete,” Adams said with passion.
Adams wanted to finish his degree at Syracuse University, but with the major he was pursuing, he was required to be on campus for two semesters to complete it. When he heard about Southern New Hampshire University’s online program with MLS, he decided to pursue that path to finish his degree.
“I weighed my options to see what was more reasonable for me which was in Southern New Hampshire,” Adams explained. “One thing I like is we are in charge of the workload we have. We select something we are comfortable with. I want to just graduate with ease and not rush.”
For Campbell, he isn’t as far ahead as Adams. Campbell forwent college and signed a Homegrown Contract last year with Atlanta United straight out of high school. As he grew relationships with his teammates, one former ATL UTD player, Kevin Kratz, encouraged Campbell and the younger guys to get their degrees.
“It’s because of them,” Campbell said. “They convinced me it was smart to start now rather than when you need a degree in 10 years, and you are starting from scratch.”
Larentowicz and Kann also encouraged him to pursue his education. Even with 10 years between Campbell and veteran Jeff Larentowicz and keeper Alec Kann, they still have a bond and look out for the younger guys.
“Usually, you’re hanging around your age group, but there’s no avoiding talking to any of the players at one point,” Campbell expressed. “They all really have a good influence on us. Those guys really put a bug in my ear. The finisher was all the young guys doing it too. That all helped me as well.”
Between Zoom workouts, fitness plans and meal plans, Campbell and Adams still find time every day to study in their classes. Adams usually studies in the evening before dinner after he’s facetimed with his family in England where Campbell studies before he goes to bed after dinner with the family. They both have developed a routine during this quarantine to keep them focused and on track.
As for Campbell, he’s just focusing on his core classes as he tries to figure out what his major will be. Adams still is pursuing a business administrations degree with a focus in sports. Though they both are taking it class by class and slowly with their career, they both know it will pay off in the long run.
