While some decide to spread their tattoos across their body, Leandro González Pirez has concentrated his bunch solely on his left arm. With a quick glance, the sleeve appears as a clustered canvas full of vibrant colors, symbols and intricate illustrations. But if you ask him, he’ll explain every last detail.
Most prominent are the scales of the dragon and koi fish that wrap around his bicep. Legend has it that school of koi were swimming up the river, when most turned back because of a colossal waterfall. However, one continued on, fighting and jumping for hundreds of years to reach the top. The Gods recognized the perseverance and determination of the brave koi and turned him into a Golden Dragon.
Leandro says the art represents “always swimming against the current,” symbolizing fight and overcoming. For those who have seen him play, it’s no secret that the Argentine bleeds these attributes.
As you look down his forearm you’ll find a colorful, floral pattern. The Paeonia or “Peony” is a lush, rounded flower regarded around the world as a symbol of romance, prosperity and honor as well as bringing good fortune and a happy marriage. Many times this year Pirez has expressed his overwhelming joy of living with his wife and their dogs here in Atlanta. It seems the Paeonia is proving its worth.
When you stare a little closer, there lie a few Japanese characters tattooed in black on his bicep and inside of his wrist. The words translate to “family” and “friendship” respectively, two aspects of his life that he holds dear to his heart.
For some, tattoos go beyond the ink. Pirez will agree. If you come across someone with a full sleeve, ask them about it. You could learn more about them than any biography could offer.
