Tattoos have become a popular trend among those in the soccer world, some are obvious, exotic and nearly visible at all times while others are located in places less often exposed. Atlanta United’s Carlos Carmona has both.
Impossible to ignore on sight of the Chilean midfielder, an intricate, geometric, almost tribal pattern adorns his right arm in ink. However, what most people don’t know is that Carmona designed it all himself. A part of his heart belongs to creativity and while he’s had the entire illustration drawn for a long time now, the actual artwork on his arm is yet to be finished with some shading and shadows still to come.
His other tattoo is a little more subtle and most of the time concealed. Five years ago, along with five of his childhood friends, he got a hometown symbol inked on his rib cage as a permanent reminder of his roots in Chile.
The significance of the skull & crossbones dates back to the days when Chile was a Spanish colony. The town of Coquimbo developed as a port city, frequently inhabited and populated by pirates from the open waters and legends have it that hidden treasures still lie around the city to this day.
There’s more to ink than meets the eye. For Carmona it’s a way to express his artistic abilities and a way to keep home close to heart.
