By now most people recognize the boy from Asunción, Paraguay by his Five Stripes, his iconic smile or the number ten on his back, but few know he prides himself on the art he carries on his arms.
Miguel Almirón made the decision to permanently put his lifelong inspiration on his forearms last year. At first glance, you’ll see a short phrase written along his right arm and a depiction of a soccer ball near his left wrist. But they run much deeper than the ink.
“Tu eres el camino, la verdad y la vida” it reads in cursive writing along his right forearm, which translates to “[God] You are the way, the truth and life” in Spanish. As he journeys through life, facing his most difficult obstacles and making his toughest choices, he can always seek guidance in his religious beliefs, with a reminder literally on his sleeve.
On the other arm lies the soccer ball. When looking closely, the detail and shading of the illustration is prominent, and you’ll notice the ball is encircled by a Bible verse. “El tiempo de Dios es perfecto,” it says, translating to “God’s timing is perfect.” Almirón says it's meant to represent the everlasting and essential presence of God and soccer in his life.
For the 23-year-old Paraguayan international, tattoos go beyond the surface. They're not just built with ink, they're galvanized by inspiration. Perhaps more than two lie in his future.
