On July 18, 2020, Atlanta United added Paraguayan striker Erik López to the roster. López signed with ATL UTD 2 for 2020 and was brought up to the first team the first day of 2021.
The striker comes from Olimpia, a Paraguayan Primera Division top club, where he was a part of the club’s first place finishes in both Apertura and Clausura seasons. He started with the club as a youth in their academy when he was just 13 years old. He worked his way up through the club until he earned his spot on the first team in August 2019. In only 12 appearances for the club, he scored four goals and two assists.
One of the reasons he was on ATL UTD’s radar was his first team experience and success at a young age. He also earned minutes with the Paraguayan U-23 national team.
“Although only 18 years old, he already has first team and international experience playing in Paraguay’s top division and in the Copa Libertadores,” Atlanta United Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra said. “He is a versatile forward with great instincts and movement. He was highly sought after and we are pleased he chose to sign with our club.”
López arrived in August where he quarantined for 10 days until he started training at Atlanta United’s facilities.
López made his debut with the first team in December during the resumed Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League tournament in Orlando. It was a solid performance and provided a preview of what is to come in the new year.
