Women belong in all places, including sports.
International Women's Day is March 8. To celebrate this year, Atlanta United hosted Women & Girls in Sports Night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium during the club's match against New York Red Bulls.
Women and girls show up each and every matchday, but this Saturday was all about them getting their flowers.
Those who purchased the women and girls' ticket package were able to take part in the sports panel in the Harrah's Club. The panel featured leaders in the industry who are making an impact.
Women led the way for the traditional supporters' march to the stadium from Lot 17. Leaders from supporter groups organized the march and led with a sign that read, 'Not Just Boys' Fun.'
Earlier in the week, Atlanta United released their custom-made retail line, made for women, by women. And women supporters came in droves to the Team store to excitedly purchase clothes made and designed specifically for them. The crewneck sweatshirt, tank top, scarf and hats were evident all around the stadium.
The color guard prior to the match was brought by women from the Coretta Scott King School. The singer for the national anthem was Marry Kate Farmer.
Walking out with the players onto the pitch and carrying the colors, these roles were held by Saturday by girls.
Women and girls made the match run, serving as officials on the field and ball kids, ready at any moment to provide a ball for play.
Women from the supporter groups carried the spike down the stairs to the capo stand. There, member of Atlanta Vibe, the women's professional indoor volleyball team, hit it home.
It was a night of celebrating women. They showed up and made their voices heard, cheering on the team for every exciting moment.
